Early insights from the 2018 Industry Survey

If you attended the Fall Business and Finance Forum on November 13, you got a glimpse at some early results from the 2019 Industry Survey. While an official report based on final results won’t be released before early 2020, some interesting tidbits were still able to be presented.

For the early analysis, 75 surveys were received, which represented just over half of the ARRM member organizations that received a survey. Those 75 member organizations reported over $861 million in revenue from waivers for disability services in 2018, or slightly under one-third of all 2018 waiver spending on home and community-based services.

Here are some interesting early factoids:

  • While 75 percent of the revenue fell in the community residential services bucket, that corresponded to only about 36 percent of the individuals served, and their average cost was $90,000 per person per year.
  • In contrast, over half of the individuals served were in the unit-based services bucket, but they only contributed about 12 percent of the total revenue and cost $10,000 per person per year.
  • While 72.5 percent of those member organizations reported a net profit in community residential services operations reported in 2018, 47 percent of organizations recorded net profit in unit-based services during the same period.*

*NOTE: "Profit" in this instance is purely semantics to indicate programs in those specific service areas took in more revenue than expenses. It does not necessarily mean overall organizations turned an overall net profit for the fiscal year.

Stay tuned for additional data from the annual industry survey, and if you have any questions, contact Ken Bence at kbence@arrm.org.
