Cultural Self-Awareness as a Tool for Effective Change; Jesse Ross
If cultural competence is about bridging across differences that make a difference, then the work must start with a focus on self. Our identities and cultures inform our beliefs, values, assumptions and biases and thus influence the ways we think about behave when working and relating across difference. This workshop helps change agents explore their own cultural patterns and behaviors and links identity awareness to our capacity to make new and different choices to achieve equity or inclusion goals.
- Understand one’s own cultural context
- Increased awareness of influences of other cultures
- Common language around diversity, equity, inclusion, & cultural competency
- Ability to identify target identities and agency identities
- Practical solutions on how to serve your constituents better
- Diversity, equity, & inclusion implementation ideas
Effective Communication and Public Speaking
Our workshop leader hails from a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean whose Triangle was the death knell to many an American ship and military plane. On his native Bermuda he worked in the Department of Communication and Information as a speechwriter for the Honorable Premier and members of his Cabinet. A trained Journalist, Emergency Medical Technician and Former MMA fighter, our speaker moved to the United States in 2006 to attend graduate school at Howard University in Washington DC. He is President of Toastmasters Club 75, Minneapolis and has won two Area speaking competitions that were held earlier this year. He lives by the adage that “effective communication is not about words.... it’s always about body language and pauses and silences which do the real heavy lifting whenever people converse.”
