Mid-December Training: Federal Compliance Requirements for Fraud, Waste, & Abuse; and the National Provider Identifier (NPI)
By Barbara Fraley, ARRM Research Director

ARRM's Financial Resources Committee proudly presents a training in mid-December on two timely topics for Member CEOs, CFOs, COOs, and Administrators: the Federal Compliance Requirements for Fraud, Waste, and Abuse; and the National Provider Identifier.

This half-day training, likely to be scheduled around December 12th or 13th, will run from about 1 to 4 p.m. in a metro-area location. An agenda, detailed topic descriptions, location, and time should be finalized by early next week, and invitations and registration forms will be sent by email/fax to CEOs/Owners and other, likely-interested Members.

Attorney Sam Orbovich,  Orbovich & Gartner Chartered, will walk Members through the federal compliance requirements that are scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2007. These requirements pertain to only those providers who …receive or make annual payments under the State plan of at least $5,000,000… This requirement is part of the Deficit Reduction Act's new Medicaid Integrity Program, developed to increase the government's capacity to prevent, detect, and address fraud and abuse in the Medicaid program. Sam's presentation will include policy and employee training guidelines, checklists, and templates that you can take away and apply to your own organization's compliance effort.

DHS' Training Projects Coordinator, Jessica Bierbrauer, will train Members on the National Provider Identifier (NPI). The NPI is the standard unique health identifier for health care that providers are to use in filing and processing health-care claims and other transactions. This identifier is mandated by the Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. Learn how the NPI will change the way you submit claims to Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP). DHS began accepting your NPIs on claims on October 2, 2006, and they recommend you obtain your NPI and submit it to MHCP by January 1, 2007, so they can prepare for the May 23, 2007, compliance date. Also, there are a "exceptions" in our industry, i.e., those providers considered "atypical," and MHCP created new 10-digit Unique Minnesota Provider Identifiers (UMPIs) for atypical providers.

So, there's plenty to learn and do with these two major changes in our industry. Please join our education effort this December! Your emailed invitation will include the cost and all details about the training, as well as a direct link to our on-line registration form that will be available by that time at www.arrm.org. This is a Members-Only educational opportunity.
