Take part in the political process
Your participation is critical to ensure adequate funding for disability services.
You are responsible for providing the critical day-in-day-out care to Minnesota’s most vulnerable citizens. Unfortunately, many Minnesota legislators don’t know what you do or why your work is so important.
When a candidate knocks, tell them:
1. It is crucial that people with disabilities live independently and participate fully in all aspects of life. I believe that caring for Minnesota’s most vulnerable citizens is a core government service.
2. I support candidates that favor adequate funding of these services.
3. I’d like to be a resource for you in the future and educate you on the issues affecting people with disabilities. Please let me know if you’d like to hear more about disability services. (Invite them to visit your facility or program site.)
4. Encourage others who are concerned about people with disabilities to get involved, and make sure you and others vote in your local and state elections.
5. Download the Word document door hanger template, which can be customized by any agency to capture its unique message or branding.
Always keep in mind that your lawmakers are elected to represent your interests. They need to stay in touch with you—or face the prospect of losing their jobs at re-election time. Likewise, you need to stay in touch with your elected officials—or live with legislation that doesn’t represent your views.
